My Stuff

Building this has been an excellent learning experience and after studying CSS, color theory, W3C tutorials, and MovableType Templates, I know stylesheets and W3C Web Standards will be the future and content (including structure) will finally be independent of design. I enjoy creating both, and I go through phases where one aspect will dominate over another, only to “phase-shift” to something else later on.

Two of the most challenging aspects of this whole thing were getting everything to validate and setting up the stylesheet so it had some flexibility. One of the things I’ve decided along the way is that I will design for W3C standards, no matter what browser anyone is using, I won’t hack in work-arounds. If there is wonkiness in your browser, then I suggest you get one that is closest to the real Standards… preferably some version of Mozilla. I’ll be writing more about site/blog design elsewhere. :)
I chose darker colors for my own blog for a number of reasons, both philosophical and personal. I am vision-impaired in one eye, the injury was such to leave me with no lens in that eye. It gathers more light into my head than a normal eye can. White backgrounds give me a headache, and the text is hard for me to look at for extended periods of time. I don’t complain too much about other peoples’ sites, but I prefer to have my own sites accommodate my vision, rather than wearing sunglasses 100% of the time. *grins*

Yeah, I’m using the full gecko (1.5 here), since I also use it for mail (love the filtering!) And I’m discovering all kinds of useful developer tools for it, too, but only installing the things I’ll actually use.

I was super leery about the stumbleupon toolbar too. I generally don’t like installing toolbars because of fears of spyware and other ill-formed crap hidden in them. I took a chance on stumble and installed it, and so far, it’s worked out really well. I’m enjoying the new sites I’m finding (and suggesting) with it. It’s turned into a lot of fun… much better than I thought it was going to be. :)

    Different approach?

Standards aren’t new. Everyone from Mark Pilgrim to Dave Shea has talked about them. However, the fight for standards is still making buzz around the web. So far, I’ve seen a lot of improvement on the web, as the push…

    a dark coloured skin

As promised to Áine, I made a dark skin for this blog. Couldn’t help myself and added lots of colour but I hope it still is easier on the eyes for her. I tend to use skin 5, what about…
