Candidate Selector

In a little less than a year, we’ll be attempting to elect a President of the United States. If you’re wondering which of the possible candidates matches your ideals, and you’re not quite sure who you’ll be voting for (or if you’re not entitled to vote because you aren’t a citizen of the United States), I recommend taking the 2004 American Presidential Candidate Selector Survey which will give you a better idea of what these candidates are all about.

My Top Ten Results :

1. Your ideal theoretical candidate. (100%)
2. Dean, Gov. Howard, VT - Democrat (78%)
3. Kucinich, Rep. Dennis, OH - Democrat (72%)
4. Clark, Retired General Wesley K., AR - Democrat (66%)
5. Edwards, Senator John, NC - Democrat (64%)
6. Kerry, Senator John, MA - Democrat (55%)
7. Gephardt, Rep. Dick, MO - Democrat (55%)
8. Sharpton, Reverend Al - Democrat (54%)
9. LaRouche, Lyndon H. Jr. - Democrat (43%)
10. Libertarian Candidate (40%)

As you can see, NONE of the candidates reached the magic 80% number. I was surprised when Dean came out ahead of Kucinich, but I’m still supporting Kucinich, at least until the party makes a choice. Another thing that surprised me is the sheer number of Democratic candidates on my results… I’d always thought of myself as having no political party preference whatsoever because it didn’t seem like any party over the years represented my ideology. It’s given me some things to think about.

There were a long list of Democrats on my results too. I even suspect that a large number of the right wing politions in this country (NZ) would end up with a list of Democrats if they took the survey.

I’d support Kucinich more if it weren’t for a few mildly insane thoughts of his. Maybe “mildly insane” isn’t the right word, but I don’t think the man has a pragmatic bone in his body. I think congress would just shut down on him and he wouldn’t get anything passed at all. I prefer slow progress over no progress.

Part of the problem with these sorts of polls/surveys though is it doesn’t tell you much about the person. In choosing a candidate, most people are choosing the man (or woman) as much as his ideas.

I suppose even if I liked Bush immensely as a person, I’d still never vote for him, but I think in cases where ideology differences aren’t as clear, a lot can be said for personality.

Personality, and I think what you’re looking for is “charisma,” only gets you so far. There has to be some underlying ideology there that I can stand behind because, for me at least, I’m really tired of “appearances” with no substance being the norm. Haven’t we had enough of fluff-tv and photo-ops? :P
