Áine on January 26th, 2004 filed in MovableTypeThanks to a tutorial I read tonight at ScriptyGoddess.com, I’ve now got a PDA-Friendly version of this blog. The link to it is in the sidebar and also right here:

These PDA pages don’t work on mobiles. I’ve tried many WAP tutorials but none yield !

All mobiles do not support Web Standards. If they did, all mobiles would be able to take advantage of the special pages provided. As of right now, the vast majority of them do not recognize css files, either inline or external, nor are there other display methods that will work across all platforms. The first step is to clue-in the manufacturers of these devices to build their browser software so that it meets Web Standards. W3C even has a special version of XHTML meant just for mobile devices called XHTML Basic, unfortunately, it leaves out some pretty relevant tags. At this point, there is very little anyone can do to provide a mobile version of their blog that can be viewed by all mobile devices, short of presenting the content in XML format… and even then, not all mobile devices can render that. One of the things you -can- do, however, is to build a PDA template that is free of sidebars, since most mobile devices don’t see the sidebars anyway.

I’ve seen tutorials on SG for Wap pages but they don’t work either. They shouldn’t be labelled WAP and then utilise XHTML/CSS !

If all wireless devices (pda’s, cell phones, sidekicks, etc.) would support XHTML and external css, there wouldn’t be a problem seeing fully formatted, pda-friendly pages. Unfortunately, that’s not yet the case.
