Of Widgets, Web Logs, and Browsers

Some links you might find interesting:

MyLaszlo BlogBox : a Flash widget for your blog or website sidebar to keep links handy and compact. You can see mine in the lower part of the sidebar. The javascript needed some minor tweaking to make it compliant with the XHTML Validator. — Link courtesy of Morgaine. Be aware that the BlogShares spiders will most likely not be able to pick up those links when they make the rounds of blog indexing, so you might not want to put your playing friends’ blog links in there.

betterbrowser.gifimages/betterbrowser.gif” width=”90″ height=”19″ border=”0″ /> : a campaign to make people aware that there are better browsers than IE, as well as to entice Microsoft into making their browser compatible with Web Standards. I noted, however, that the linking code they provided will not, as is, pass the XHTML Validator. Mine does.

And the above led me to read Tim Bray’s thoughts on the subject of browsers which he wrote back in July. If you’re one of those people that think IE is a “standard browser” and anyone that doesn’t use it should go get a “standard browser” then this may just be the article you didn’t know you need to read.

IE doesn’t compatible with W3C ??? Never knew that. The only reason I use IE (well MYIE which is a tabbed version of IE) is because 99% of the webpages out there look best on IE. Take for example my page. On the default skin in mozilla as I’m using php for the sidebar it looks kinda weird !

IE fails to meet Web Standards in a lot of different ways. Several of the standard markup tags don’t render properly in IE. And .png support is also flawed in IE, which they have been aware of since 1996 and still haven’t fixed.

Another thought: are you willing to wait until Longhorn for a new version of Internet Explorer? You’ll have to buy the next O/S if you want an updated browser. And Mac Users aren’t going to get one out of Microsoft, according to everything I’ve read so far.

Down with IE! Firebird is my usual browser of choice, though I’m giving Mozilla another go today. I’m also running Mandrake 9.2 as my OS seeing as my PC runs Windows 98 and I can’t either afford to buy a new version and it probably wouldn’t run anyway (old POS!).

Never be afraid to try something new - often the effort is worth it.
