Yet Another Reason to Get A Better Browser
Áine on June 25th, 2004 filed in GeneralWeb browser flaw prompts warning : A large number of web sites, some of them quite popular, were compromised earlier this week to distribute malicious code. The attacker uploaded a small file with javascript to infected web sites, and altered the web server configuration to append the script to all files served by the web server, including image files and html files. If a person visited an infected site, the javascript delivered by the site’s files would instruct the user’s MSIE browser to download one of several executables, including keystroke loggers, proxy servers and other back doors providing full access to the now-infected machine, from a Russian web site and installing the files on a user’s machine. The javascript uses a so far unpatched vulnerability in MSIE to download and execute the code. No warning will be displayed. The user does not have to click on any links, just visiting an infected site will trigger the exploit. Given that this attack is likely going to be repeated using different javascript code in the future, it is recommended that you install or update anti-virus software, if possible turn off javascript in your browser (not a good idea for most users, especially MT bloggers), or use a browser other then MSIE until the current vulnerabilities in MSIE are patched. Don’t think you said it enough times Aine
There are also other browsers one could use, in fact I pointed my parents to using Opera. The main reason is because Yahoo loads funny in Firefox and plus there are some bugs with it !

I’ve heard reports that gmail doesn’t work right with Opera, but works fine in Firefox and Mozilla. Overall, I’ve had less problems with Mozilla than any other browser I’ve tried, but I still need to do more testing with Firefox on the laptop… I don’t get online enough with the laptop (yet) to have had much experience with it, but I’ll be putting it through my own set of geeky tests eventually.

nod, Firefox has a couple of ‘eccentricities’, but overall is much safer atm. I can sift arounf the net a whole day now with Firefox, run Ad-Aware at the end of the day and still be completely clean. That would never ever happen with IE.
