Stop the Insanity!
Áine on September 27th, 2004 filed in PoliticsKevin Drum over at The Washington Monthly has written a really good summary of the chronology of Bush actions that have failed miserably, and even he’s beginning to question the sanity of this administration. The thing is, everyone out here in the real world isn’t drinking the Kool-Aid… and our media? — Talk about repetition and propaganda! Sheesh!
Another weird thing about the Right wing… their assertion that Al Qaeda would rather Kerry win the election. Republican House Speaker Dennis Hastert, who said last week, “I don’t have data or intelligence to tell me one thing or another,” which is an assertion that no one with a working brain cell left would doubt, but he continued then to say that Al Qaeda would more likely want to see Kerry win the election, and practically accused Kerry of being aligned with terrorism. Is the Right Wing’s view of reality just so far “out there” that voices in their heads are suggesting these things to them? And then there’s the suggestion that bin Laden would want Kerry to win, which is countered by this…
“He [bin Laden] got an explosion of anti-Americanism around the world, potential recruits lined up out the cave door and around the block for future suicide missions, swell new opportunities for terrorism in the chaos of Iraq itself, and the forced retirement of Saddam Hussein, whom he never cared for. He got a thousand Americans dead and hundreds of billions of capitalist dollars gone — results that would make any terrorist episode a huge success — without his having to lift a finger. And meanwhile, every bomb dropped on Iraq was a bomb not dropped on him. What’s not to like?” [Source: Michael Kinsley at Washington Post]
So, Osama would want Bush to win. Insane, isn’t it? It’s like, armchair quarterbacks sitting around taking bets on who the terrorists would vote for. And then, there’s Bush and Allawi… each day their positions on how things are going are flip-flopping back and forth, backpeddling on whatever they said the day before (you can check even just the last month or so of their public statements and see how that’s wavered).
Meanwhile, every single day the headlines are filled with reports of more and more deaths over there, and there are families on both sides of this suffering because of it. And then there are the families of the victims of 9/11 who are watching all of this and seeing that their concerns about getting the people who destroyed their loved ones and the lives they expected to lead destroyed, and no one is pursuing the man who planned and funded the terrorists. In fact, these families are suing the government of Saudi Arabia, and a friend of Our Employee is the lawyer arguing against them in the lawsuit. How’s that for a slap in the face?
Don’t you think it’s time we got above all of this insanity and return to the realm of right vs. wrong and plain common sense? Don’t you think we deserve the truth about what’s really going on over there and in our own government and what’s being done (or not done) to secure this nation and the nation of Iraq? If you only get your news from TV, you’re not going to get at the truth. What’s been done to secure the borders of both countries? What’s been done to secure nukes around the world so that fundamentalists don’t get their hands on them to use them for terrorism? The answer will scare the shit out of you. The narrow-minded true believers probably won’t bother to find out, but you and they deserve to know. Find out.
