F-911 : Factual Backup
Áine on October 22nd, 2004 filed in PoliticsAlthough I haven’t seen the movie yet because it has been banned from the theatres in the entire 906 Area Code by the monopoly that runs all our theatres (GKC Cinema), some people (right wingers, in particular) say it is nothing but lies and distortions, and I haven’t been able to counter their claims… until now : Factual Back-Up For Fahrenheit 9/11 : Notes + Sources. Line-by-line, Michael Moore presents the notes and references for every part of the movie, which can easily be checked by anyone who is at least somewhat capable with Google and a web browser.
Heh! Like to see them counter that… and cite their sources.
While on his 60 city “Slacker Uprising Tour,” Oscar-winning filmmaker Michael Moore is joining forces with video store operators in an effort to get as many Americans as possible to see the film before the election. Video stores across the country will be waiving the usual rental fee for “Fahrenheit 9/11,” beginning on October 26. A recent Harris poll showed that 44 percent of Republicans who have seen the film gave it a positive rating. “It isn’t possible to view this film and come out saying you are voting George W. Bush,” stated Moore.

I know this is “preaching to the choir”, but I disagree very very vehemently with not making F-911 available anywhere people wish to see it. I don’t like Michael Moore and I base that on things having nothing to do with my moderate political views, but dammit - the man should be heard. I don’t have to love what he has to say but I’ll defend to the death his right to say it, that sort of thing.
That said: I don’t plan to see it because to me it smacks unpleasantly of profiteering from the tragedy. I lived less than 100 miles from NYC on that day. The memories are still difficult. It offends me when anyone - Kerry, Bush, Moore, ANYone - profiteers from it.
But that’s the great thing about living in freedom. He has the right to say it, I have the right not to listen, and we can all make the choices we wish.
Bush and Ashcroft can rot in hell, IMO. SCREW those two asshats for trying to take away these basic rights. “If This Goes On…”

Exactly. It’s as simple as my right to see/hear what he has to say, imho, and it’s not as if he’s airing it on network television, or trying to force stations to show it (unlike what Sinclair tried to do with that other movie).
Profiteering from the tragedy? Maybe so, but on the other hand, he’s not “using” it to try an attain the presidency (unlike the encumbent who insists on drawing a connection between 9/11 and Iraq when no such connection exists.) This administration has based a war on false statements, phony documents, and planned the whole Iraq invasion thing PRIOR to 9/11 (as documents and their own public statements show). I consider that far worse.
Update 26 October: Moore says go ahead and pirate it and offer it for free. So, I guess that helps emeliorate the “profiteering” thing somewhat.

I’ve had a chance to think about all this, and I really don’t like my reply to your comment because of one thing I should have brought up, and that is this:
What offends me much more than Moore “profiteering” off the grief this administration has wrought on the people of the U.S., as well as the people of Iraq, is that Bush and his cronies have not only used this to advance their own political agenda, but have also profitted massively from this and the ensuing war in Iraq. And they don’t care that men and women and children were killed and are being killed. In Moore’s case, his profit comes as a result of wanting to tell us the truth. In Bush’s case, his profit comes as a result of lying to all of us and not giving a shit that people are dead and are dying because of his lies. Proof that such is not the case with Bush would have been if he had attended even one funeral of one soldier… which he has not done.
I would rather pay the man who tells me the truth, than the one who uses the blood of my people for his own political and selfish means. I hate Bush and all he stands for. I will not give my sons to his military to die in vain for his lies and his profits. If we must break the laws to avoid that, we will… and we’ll consider ourselves patriots for standing up for what we believe in, regardless of what anyone else thinks about that. My family stands for a long, long line of soldiers, airmen, sailors, and patriots. We have given our flesh and blood in wars for this country, we have paid the price for our patriotism and our right to disagree with our government.
Those who support the Bush regime should be willing to go down to the recruiter’s office and enlist for their cause… but they should not ask nor expect me or mine to do so.
