Watching Congress

Áine on November 20th, 2004 filed in Politics

Just a reminder that you can watch most of the proceedings in Congress live online on C-SPAN.org, both the Senate and House, as bills come up for debate and votes. If you were watching the Senate this evening, you might have seen senators voting on a horrible omnibus spending bill that is 3,300 pages long and contains some hidden provisions allowing certain committee chairmen in Congress or any “agent” they authorize to access whoever’s IRS tax returns and records that they want FOR NO REASON. And then, they are also free to publicize it wherever or however they wish. This is how our Constitution and our rights are being dismantled before our very eyes and sadly by the very same people who are elected to represent us. And there is nothing we can do about it… until the next elections in 2006.

You can also listen to audio of Senate Committee hearings (live) over at CapitolHearings.org, a new service from C-SPAN. The Senate produces the audio feeds, and C-SPAN encodes and streams these hearings online. There are 26 U.S. Senate Committee hearing rooms that have audio streaming capabilities, and the site will list the daily schedule of hearings.

    Hi Auntie Pam,

You can also access text versions of proposed bills from all branches at http://www.gpoaccess.gov/eop/index.html
I have it bookmarked as I check what the bills are that are being proposed and they usually give a deadline for receiving comments. If no one writes any objections to them, they become law so it is important to assert your rights as a citizen. It is crazy some of the crap they waste my tax dollars on….like for example ‘Is an avocado in Mexico the same as an avocado in California in regard to size, shape and color?’ Who the hell cares? And guess what our Border Patrol and Customs personnel are busy doing? Not keeping our borders safe…they are busy making sure the tuna fish cans are counted in a large warehouse somewhere to keep the tariffs down. Take a peak…it is interesting to say the very least.

    Cheers,

    M

Copy and paste that into a new window and then bookmark it, since this popup window is so tiny. :)

The people who really run organizations are usually found several levels down, where it is still possible to get things done.
