What is this blog all about?
Áine on January 7th, 2005 filed in FAQ'sI can’t even begin to formulate a proper reply to the question, so I’m just going to ramble on and hope that something of significance comes along in response to the question. In many ways, this blog has evolved dramatically over time since it’s inception. All of the original entries are not here (thus, the beginning dates incorrectly reflect the actual beginning of this blog) because when I started blogging, there was no easy way to archive and then import all your posts into a new blogging application, and between hard drive failures and dead and dying home computers, much has been lost to the aether, but as I reflect back on things, that is probably how it should be.
The entries here have run the gamut from politics to world news to spirituality to technology and web design to intellectual property and copyright to whatever is happening in my daily life, and with a few silly bits in between. In trying to answer the question, I have looked at the blogs who link to me to see where they fit me into their blogrolls or link lists… some put me under Progressive Politics, some put me under Technology, while others list me as Favorite Reads or as Friends. I’m linked to by several complete strangers who have never commented here or in any way contacted me, and I have no idea what they think about this blog or me, as a writer, but it’s nice to know they’re reading. I’ve gotten notes from other strangers who tell me things like: “you’re on my list of people who I pray live a long time, along with Terry Pratchett of DiscWorld fame.” That one made me smile. I’m in good company there.
I have also been humbled by those who hold me in high esteem, much more so than I think I deserve. At a dinner of my high school classmates last year, one of our group, a bank vice president, told the rest that I was a web expert and that she was impressed by my websites and the various things I’ve done online. I never thought I would hear anyone say that, least of all a bank vice president, and to hear it being said (about me?!?) was touching… moreso than I can say.
Recently I was told that at least one person had nominated this blog for the upcoming Bloggies (awards) under the category of Politics. I don’t think I deserve that, but I was told “that’s not up to you to decide.” True, but the idea that anyone else would think so is very humbling indeed.
There are some blogs online that are very easy to classify as being about such-and-such topic. There are others, like this one, that are very difficult to classify because the subject matter varies from week to week. I guess you could say that a blog like this one is about perspective and viewpoint. It’s about the things I’ve learned and the things that matter to me, as a person… the things that touch my heart or enrage me or make me sad or pique my interest. And my interests vary from moment to moment, I’m just that way. Most of all, I think this blog is about conversations and thoughts… me to you and you to me… what matters to us as human beings sharing this same planet, whether we agree or disagree, our lives are interconnected even if we never say one word to one another… it’s also about what we find good and bad about what we encounter in this journey we call “life” no matter what the subject matter may be. It’s true I’m not narrowly focused on one topic or another, but neither are our lives, when you really sit down and think about it.

I guess the fact that you can’t classify this blog is what makes it such a great read

This is what you do for me;
Like morning’s first breath,
Bringing the new day’s flavor
To my sleepy mind,
Your words bite like winter’s frost,
Or carry summer’s blessings.
Though I know not what
Each day will bring, I know this,
You speak with passion,
That stirs the winds of my mind,
Making me welcome mornings.

for ten years
ever since my mother
made the Great Journey
and for five years
ever since Eolhtyr
found someone new
mornings for me
were a grave disappointment
another day i have to get through
until you came along
and in your poems showed me
the great gift i hold inside
and reminded me
of Who i really am.
