Áine on January 21st, 2005 filed in GeneralIt’s stories like this that greatly amuse me. It turns out that the FCC is going after and attempting to fine a commercial entity called Entercom for supposed over-the-air radio violations that occurred more than two years ago. The really amusing thing is, the FCC pressure on Entercom didn’t even begin until just before the November elections. Why? Because it came out that the company’s 72-year-old founder, Joseph M. Field, was making huge donations to Kerry’s presidential campaign (something like $1.82M given to some 527’s linked to George Soros). Oh, but this “scandal” also apparently involves “payola”… but it’s funny, the FCC isn’t going after the record company executives… no, they’re choosing to go after a DJ instead. Feh.
Over at Slashdot: Kjella writes “A Califorian bill introduced last week would, if passed, expose file-swapping software developers to fines of up to $2,500 per charge, or a year in jail, if they don’t take ‘reasonable care’ to prevent their software from being used to commit crime. C|Net has the story, as well as a link to the actual bill. By the overly broad definition of P2P software, almost any piece of internet software could be liable. This browser is certainly able to download and upload files (’Save as …’ and upload forms). Are Microsoft, Opera and Mozilla.org taking ‘reasonable care’ to prevent me from exchanging anything illegal? Of course, I never go there, but a friend of my uncle’s third cousin’s brother told me warez download sites work just fine …”
Ya hear that Microsnot? What’s next, illegal hypertext? BTW, I’ve blocked the RIAA and MPAA from visiting this domain. Why? Because they’re not welcome here, not because I have anything illegal to hide.
This on the other hand is quite an interesting response to the DMCA, RIAA, and MPAA debacle. It’s like a honeypot for those snooping bots looking for mp3 files. Now, if only we could get one that would put out fake commenting scripts, fake email addies, fake movies, and fake music files… all in one app… we might have some fun with this.
