Spammers Must DIE!!!
Áine on January 24th, 2005 filed in Blog OnMy webhosts have turned off the comment script at the server level due to arsehole spammers exploiting the commenting script and using it to send spam from these servers, and probably from every other server as well. The problem is not limited to MovableType… any website or blog software that allows you to comment or “send this entry/article to a friend” may also be vulnerable to this exploit.
Read more about it here and here.
In addition to all of the above, I was just informed within the last twenty-four hours that a good friend of mine was forced by spammers to not only shut down his email server, but also took his domain completely offline… due to spam.
This is not funny. I am not amused.

Bloggers should find a way to unite and sue the spammers. Many of them surely live in countries where legal action is possible against them.

See www.projecthoneypot.org
There’s one possibility.

Another thing I’ve noticed about comment spammers is they make your stats pages completely useless. I have over 3,000 hits from them alone last month and can’t tell where the legitimate hits are coming from as a result.
So it appears they’ve also found a way to spam our stats. There’s no getting away from them it appears.

Jason : One of their goals is to appear (as a link) on your stats referral logs. Some people’s logs are published publicly, and the spammers hope that these public pages are indexed by google (adding page rank to their worthless pages of garbage). My stats pages are private, password protected. Even my counter stats page with sitemeter is private (all you see when you click on my counter is the login page). I refuse to give the spammers what they want. Fuck ‘em all.

and the only way to block ‘em is to edit the htaccess which i have done 5 times and killed my sites 5 times. God I hate server side crap.
