I’m a Centrist on the cusp of libertarian and liberal.
Oddly enough, the US has a slightly different grasp of where a Liberal would be on the political spectrum. In the UK, the left were always considered “Socialists”, the right “conservative” and the middle ground was held by the Liberals. This has been really muddied up over the years, so now it’s impossible to know where any of the parties are trying to be.
Even in the US, I don’t think that many Democrat politicians could be called “Liberals” whereas I’m sure there are plenty of Republicans with Liberal attitudes.

Political map
From the map above you can see where I stand, allegedly, on the political map. The map has a US-bias on the political spectrum, but I suppose it does correctly lumber me with a “Centrist” tag. I’ve always considered…

What’s made the issue here in the US even more confusing is that there has been a concerted effort by the right-wing to change the meanings of commonly used words, like “liberal,” to mean something completely different than as originally defined. The trouble is, most uninformed people will just go along with this and adopt it into their worldview rather than stop and think about what the words really mean.
The usage of words for very specific agendas is something that, I think, came about as a result of marketing efforts. When you “buy into” the new meaning, you are buying into a thought process not of your own making. Where it ends is no longer a matter of your own choosing. If you stop to think about that, you begin to realize that people are being “programmed” in a way that many (if not most) of them are not aware.
In many ways, all of this is like an analogy of The Matrix… or perhaps the ideas in that series of movies could be interpreted as a wake up call for all of us to become aware of what’s being done to us in the name of corporatism? Personally, I consider myself “unplugged” from the Matrix, so for me it is like being an outside observer, noticing what I’m not supposed to notice.
