Dear Democratic National Committee
Áine on February 8th, 2005 filed in Politics, UndeliverableSince you lost the election last November, I have received email after email from a)the Party leadership, b)the losing presidential candidate, c)the losing vice presidential candidate, and d)the losing vice presidential candidate’s wife, all asking me in one way or another to take actions or to stop actions on a national level. If all of you at the level of power you are now at are counting on me, a private citizen, to do what you could not do, then the Democratic Party is in deeper trouble than any of us knew. Your failure to make a strong stand against the opposition and its loyalty on election day, and your movement towards the right, which amounts to submission under this administration, point out to me your complete lack of understanding about your supporters, our platform (which doesn’t seem to be the same as yours), and what it will take to win back a majority in Congress and eventually to regain the White House.
If you had spent even ten percent of the funds you are now spending on these little missives in my email box, just on finding out how your constituency stands on the issues, you might have a better idea of how to win elections. Climbing into bed with the opponents on the Right, as Senators Lieberman and Clinton appear to be doing, is the wrong way to go. You all have missed the “heart of the matter.”
In The Soul of Classical Liberalism by James M. Buchanan, he writes:
“My focus is on the differences among these adherents, and specifically on the differences between those whose advocacy stems from an understanding of the very soul of the integrated ideational entity and those whose advocacy finds its origins primarily in the results of scientific inquiry and the dictates of enlightened self-interest.
The larger thesis is that classical liberalism, as a coherent set of principles, has not secured, and cannot secure, sufficient public acceptability when its vocal advocates are limited to the second group. Science and self-interest, especially as combined, do indeed lend force to any argument. But a vision of an ideal, over and beyond science and self-interest, is necessary, and those who profess membership in the club of classical liberals have failed singularly in their neglect of this requirement.”
As far as anybody outside of the Democratic Party leadership (including the DNC) can see, none of you have even an inkling of that vision. If you had, it would have shaped the very language and narrative of every speech, every debate, and every mailing (electronic and postal) that were “broadcast” to the people of the United States. Right now, as I see it, your only hope lies in Howard Dean whose vision more closely resembles the vast majority of Liberal Democrats today. Unfortunately, the Right already had their playbook written up on how to destroy Howard Dean in the press before you guys ever figured out how to counteract their media machine, if you’ve even figured that out yet. I would, however, like to suggest you all get your heads out of your collective sand hills and sit down with Dennis Kucinich and listen to what he actually has to say. You might learn something.
In my opinion, it’s also about time you all got out of your nice offices and visited the real America where people are overworked, underpaid, deeply in debt, and under-insured. It’s a bit like climbing out onto a high wire without a safety-net while Congressmen from both sides of the aisle poke at you with far-reaching cattle prods (their votes against your own best interests and those of America). Take it from me, it’s scary out here.
Sincerely,
The Evil Queen
