Don’t Think - Don’t Talk - Don’t Question

I think we should be discussing the attempt by Congress to destroy the legal standing between married couples, supposedly a ’sacred institution’… oh, but I guess if we’re talking about gay couples, then it’s not worth it - right?

We should also be discussing the whole ‘Sanctity of Life’ thing as it applies to everyone who can’t afford medical care… oh, but I guess that only applies in singular cases and we can ignore the 44 million other people who don’t have health insurance - right?

And we should also be discussing the FACT that Medicare’s financial problems far exceed Social Security’s and are in urgent need of attention… but then that might call attention to how it was Bush’s own policies (the 2003 prescription drug ‘benefit’) that caused the shortfalls, and we couldn’t possibly look at that - right?

Let’s not talk about unemployment, the national debt, the Iraq war, the anti-war protests, the detention, rendition, and torture of prisoners by the U.S., the criminal behavior of Tom DeLay & friends, corporate corruption, political corruption, the restriction of civil rights, the degradation of the U.S. Constitution, the integrity of our voting system, the high cost of prescription drugs, the deterioration of veteran’s benefits for our returning soldiers, or anything else that Just.Might.Be.Important.

Forget it.

Let’s not talk or think about anything.

Instead, let’s fill the television news with stories about Terri Schiavo, Michael Jackson, Bobby Fischer, steroids in baseball, fingers in the chili, American Idol, and all that other mindnumbing crap…
