No Master Password, but this Mistress Now Has Keys

Have you ever been locked out of doing something with your browser because you had never set a Master Password in it, but the browser thought you did? Well, that’s what happened to me just a few minutes ago with Firefox. See, I used to use the full Mozilla suite on this computer and I never did enter a Master Password in Mozilla. And then I upgraded to Firefox and uninstalled Mozilla. It never asked me to set a password. So then tonight… I was installing an adsense extension into Firefox, which is a nifty little tool that shows you your adsense earnings for whatever period of time you’d like to see. But to use it, you have to enter the Firefox Master Password… and I didn’t have one. But Firefox thought I did. Naturally, I had no idea what that password could possibly be.
After digging around for some help on this, and being bugged incessantly by popups asking me for that password, I finally figured out how to reset the password and force Firefox to allow me to finally set a password. Turns out, I had to resort to the final recommendation on that page : “If that doesn’t help, try removing “key3.db” file from your profile folder.” That was a bit cryptic, but I finally found the right .db file, after first erasing the one from Mozilla and then locating and erasing the one from Firefox (there are two different ones because they were two different applications). Restarted Firefox and was finally able to set a Master Password, so the EvilQueen now has the keys! Heh.
