Flock : pre-alpha

Áine on October 30th, 2005 filed in Geekware

Currently testing Flock. It’s based on Firefox and is in pre-alpha, developer’s preview v.0.5. Bookmark management is integrated with del.icio.us and that’s a little bit buggy, especially if you rearrange your bookmarks. Turns out that if you move a bookmark in Flock, you lose whatever tags you had attached to it (they just seemingly vanish, and no, I don’t know where they go). You can check that for yourself by cross-checking your account at the del.icio.us site after you rearrange a list of bookmarks in one of your Flock “collections”. Interesting that some of the Firefox extensions do work, while I’m a bit leery about installing extensions on this early version, not knowing if they will destroy my profile or the Flock installation, etc., so I’m not going extension-crazy yet.

If you’re not really geeky, I don’t recommend you install Flock yet. Wait for a more developed release when things get a little more stable.

How does it compare for speed and such to Deer Park? For an alpha release, it’s nice…. o.o

    OH, IMPORTANT!

Firefox and Deer Park *might* not play nicely with each other depending on what extensions you install - they use the same preferences directory at thsi point, IIRC.

    Just a heads up. ^.^

Don’t know. I’m not using the beta of FF. I have to have at least one stable browser for my everyday web work, so I’m just using 1.0.7 until the next official release comes out.

0.4.10 update for Flock came through my notifier tonight. Basically, it sends you to the Flock site and you have to download the entire package, rather than just a few updated files. Did that. When I did, I lost all the stuff that made Flock really cool to use:

    - all the blogs I had added to the Blog Editor and their settings vanished.
    - my del.icio.us acct settings from Web Services seem to have also vanished, and there is no way to re-add my account or check settings… all the options are greyed out.
    - same thing happened to Flickr.

    Doncha just love beta? heh.

I’m building a moderately decent system piece by piece. When it’s done, gonna take the system I have now and make it my dedicated Windoze box and put Debian on the new one. I’m thinkin’ it’s about that time, that way I can beta the old box to death without having to worry about it. :)

I’d like to do that… someday. No money for the new box, but I did buy a couple of pieces (case, power supply, cd drive). I’ll get there eventually. ;)
