Call in the Plumbers
Áine on February 13th, 2006 filed in PoliticsSo Cheney or Bush (or both) ordered / authorized the leak by Libby of classified information to reporters from a high-level intelligence report that suggested Iraq was trying to obtain weapons of mass destruction, which according to Bush is a crime… and anyone who commits a crime has to leave the administration.
And: Why is it okay for Bush to reveal classified information of an allegedly foiled terror plot on LA (when the officials in LA were never informed of it)?
And: Why was it okay for the administration to leak the name of Mohammed Naeem Noor Khan as a double agent for short term political gain, and damage the Pakistani intelligence service’s investigation?
So some intelligence matters are so important that the administration will not divulge them even to critical members of Congress, but others are leaked to journalists to win a political / media war?
And yet, we’re not allowed to know how many (just the number of) American citizens that have had their privacy violated by the NSA’s domestic surveillance program(s), because, according to Bush, that would be helping Al Qaeda and “emboldening the enemy”???
And then there’s that whole Valerie Plame thing… I guess if it’s politically expedient to ignore the prohibition against leaking classified information during war time (possibly a firing squad offense), then it’s ok, RIGHT?
And the Republicans don’t see any of this as warranting impeachment… unless, of course, you’re a Democrat… and you lie about something as trivial as a blowjob…
Seems like Capitol Hill has been drinking too much Kool-Aid™.
Footnote:
Democrat senator Edward Kennedy said the new information about Libby’s testimony exposed a possible hypocrisy within the Bush Administration as it sought to punish those who leaked politically embarrassing information about secret CIA prisons and warrantless spying, but encouraged leaks that helped the Administration’s political strategy. “These charges, if true, represent a new low in the already sordid case of partisan interests being placed above national security,” Senator Kennedy said. “The Vice-President’s vindictiveness in defending the misguided war in Iraq is obvious.”
