Newsvine commentary & Silent Lucidity
Áine on March 11th, 2006 filed in Readers Write, NewsvineI got a letter from reader M.D. …
Hi there,
I’m typing this out to thank you for having an active voice in the commentary about the Colorado teacher incident. Your points intrigued me enough to follow links to your Silent Lucidity blog, so that I might find this email to contact you at. In doing so, I read the front articles as I scrolled down, and I was really excited to see such an informative presentation.
Regarding the newsvine commentary; reading your responses as you wade through the opposing viewpoints (which my feelings for ranged from neutral, to downright ignorant, not surprisingly) inspired me to let you know that, while there are tons of people out here like myself who feel as you do (although I am nowhere near as informed, just that I simply feel what you state is the correct viewpoint), for one reason or another, the vast majority do not put out the effort to communicate to the general public about all of this, let alone make any effort to inform and educate. While my time is unfortunately extremely tied up between work and classes, I definitely wanted to take a few minutes out of it to thank you, because I’m not sure just how many people are willing to make the effort to display appreciation. Just know, and you probably already do, that there must be quite a few other folks out there like myself who appreciate efforts like yours which, while making a point, do so clearly and concisely (relatively, so perhaps another good descriptor is ‘efficiently’), as it really does go a long way towards validating that viewpoint.
I’m stopping myself from raving on, whilest ranting about people and opinions in general, as not to dilute the point of this email, and also because I’m confident it would be nothing new to you. I’m going to spend a good deal of my free time in the near future to pore through more of your blog.
Thanks again, your voice really does make an impact.
Nice to get feedback like that every now and then.
Thanks, M.D.

Well, I know you like a good discussion Aine and I’m pretty sure that you’re involved in a few over at Newsvine. There are some pretty diverse viewpoints, plus a fwe ignorant trolls, but I think there’s been a few articles that have created some excellent discussion.
You do look like you’re enjoying it. I’ve followed a few and you do argue your points well.
I do find it amusing when the Democrats get labelled “lefties” or somesuch. A “liberal” party would be considered to be centre-ground in the UK, the socialists (old Labour) would be considered left of centre. I’m not convinced that the Dems could be considered socialist - I’ve always thought of them to be a moderate capitalist party with socialist/liberal leanings
Anyway, long may Newsvine provide an output for good discussion and I hope you find it worthwhile to keep posting there.

I made a similar comment in another thread at NewsVine along much the same lines myself… basically, that it depends where in the world you ARE as to how “Liberalism” is defined… and also on who is doing the defining. The Democratic Party in the U.S. is nowhere near as “left” as I wish they were! LOL I guess you could call me a “social-progressive democrat”, if you had to call me anything at all, though my votes have ranged from candidates of the Independent Party to the Green Party to the Democratic Party (I’ve yet to have had any good reason to vote for a Republican, as I typically don’t agree with much that they do, really, and that’s what I watch - what they do - not what they say)… for me, it’s not so much a “tow the line” kind of thing. I don’t, for example, walk in “lock-step” with much of the Democratic Party, and I’m not alone in thinking they could use a lot of reforms within the Party itself.
But yes, I think I’ll stick around Newsvine for a while… at least until it gets tiresome and begins to seem useless to post there (if it ever does). Mostly I’m seeding articles and writing comments on others’ stuff, and I’ve only written 2 of my own articles over there so far. I still like having my own blog… there’s just something about that feather on the bottom. *grins*
