For me, Newsvine is both a source for my consumption of news as well as a place to bring in stories from other sources and gives the public the power to publish their own articles to a growing audience of news-consuming public. It's kind of a give-and-take form of citizen journalism.\n

By now, the positions in this controversy over same-sex marriage are familiar. For its supporters, same-sex marriage is a matter of civil rights and fundamental fairness, of equality before the law. For opponents, it's perceived as an attempt to win official endorsement of homosexuality by hijacking a traditional heterosexual institution. Religious and moral objections to marriage equality are nothing new.\n

I've never been to journalism school, but the earliest journalists, who were little more than gossips, ballad singers, and dissident pamphleteers, hadn't either. That said, having been part of this thing we all call the Internet for well over a decade now, having been a blogger before there was software for blogging, and having worked with computers, in general, for just over thirty years, I just might know a few things about the online world.\n

Yoopers are kind of an odd mixture of people, and watching them in an objective sort of way (and let's not forget, I'm one of them), they remind me of what you would get if you put "The Red Green Show," "Northern Exposure," and a strange and bewildering twist of world cultures in a blender and hit "Puree," but they are some of the nicest people you'd ever like to meet, and they are unlike any other people anywhere else in the world.\n

Tagging and linking to things on the Web are organic ways of organizing information different from current categorization schemes that were invented in the offline world (such as the library card catalogue), and these new methods of categorization allow flexibility based on two units: the link, which can point to anything on the Web, and the tag, which is a way of attaching descriptive labels to links.\n

The prevailing narrative on globalization usually tells a story of transformation initiated from the west or north, and usually the scholars and proponents and opponents of globalization choose to study international trade, geopolitics, economic systems, the environment, human rights, the legal profession, or even constitutional or administrative law. Such discussions typically ignore the narratives of ordinary people…\n

One of the real challenges we face, I think, is to extend the Newsvine presence and bring this community into the journalism conversation, where we might grow the Vine into something other than bloggers and conversationalists and opinion-spouters (not that there's anything wrong with that) to enrich the community through good web journalism.\n
